What Is PTE Academic?
PTE stands for Pearson Test of English. PTE Academic is accepted by thousands of universities, colleges, and immigration authorities in countries such as Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States. If your child is planning to study abroad or apply for a visa to an English-speaking country, PTE is likely on the list of accepted tests at their destination.
How PTE Differs from IELTS
Both tests measure the same four skills: speaking, writing, reading, and listening. The key difference is how the test is delivered and marked. IELTS includes a face-to-face speaking interview with a human examiner. PTE is taken entirely on a computer, and software scores every answer — including the speaking section. Students speak into a microphone, and the scoring system evaluates pronunciation, fluency, and content.
What the Test Looks Like
The test lasts about three hours and takes place in a single sitting at an approved testing centre. There is no separate speaking appointment on a different day. Reading and listening tasks include activities such as multiple-choice questions, re-ordering sentences, and filling in blanks. Writing tasks require students to summarise a short text and write an essay. The overall score runs from 10 to 90, with separate scores for each skill.
